The shield is the fundamental part of the heraldic achievement, yet its shape is not a part of the official description but a matter of time and taste.



Valid for postage and duty

The long shield originated with foot soldiers who needed full-body protection.

     

The horse-shaped shield is popular with clergy, who are non-combatant.

Shields of a more square shape became popular as the practice of quartering developed.
