THE HERALDIC LION

The lion is one of the most important charges in heraldry. Many variations had been developed throughout the ages.

The basic positions

          

Rampant and salient are upright positions that
are suited for holding objects.

Lion passant
(passing by) 


More or less than one lion

Demi-lion
(rampant)

   Passant lions are sometimes
   referred to as  leopards.

 The  diminutive
 of lion is lioncel.
